Training

Our training department consists of two full-time employees, the Assistant Chief of Training and the Drill Master.

Numerous 24 hour employees also assist the Training Division with much ongoing training. The facility is located at 3405 So. 11th Street behind of Station #5.

We have a large classroom onsite as well as our four story training tower. We are responsible for testing as well as training new recruits.

The firefighter candidate testing process includes a written exam, an oral interview and the Candidate Physical Ability Test (C.P.A.T.).

New recruits

New recruits are placed on one year probationary period. Recruits initially go through an eight to ten week training program consisting of wellness-fitness activities, classroom, E.M.S. training and hands-on essential firefighter training.

After completion of the initial training, recruits are assigned to the field training program where they tested on a monthly basis on the basic essentials of firefighting, departmental policies and procedures, and all streets, zones, and territories of the city.

We also do continuing education for all incumbent firefighters, driver/operator training and testing, incident management training, as well as assisting in the required testing of all apparatus and equipment.
